Facts About Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS)
Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is resistant to a wide variety of chemicals while remaining stiff and strong over a broad temperature range. There are no known solvents (chemicals) that will attack down to -392 degrees F and it can be used at temperatures as high as 425 degrees continuously. With minimal moisture absorption and low linear thermal expansion, this plastic is ideal for holding extremely tight tolerances when being machined. PPS is truly a flame retardant; no additives are required to be added in the production process to give it these flame- resistant capabilities.
PPS material exhibits high impact strength, transparency, thermal resistance, and hydrolytic stability. In many cases PPS is known to take the place of metals due to its strength, toughness and high heat deflection temperature. PPS’s heat deflection abilities and hydrolytic stability allows it to be resistant to many of the commonly used acid and bases over a very broad temperature range.
Most designers choose PPS because it demonstrates a valuable combination of properties relative to the load bearing capabilities and dimensional stability when exposed to chemicals and high-temperature environments.
