POLYETHYLENE UHMW Key Facts
UHMW is an ultra-high molecular weight, high-density polyethylene resin having a molecular weight range between 2 and 5 million. UHMW has one of the highest impact strengths of any thermoplastic, this material has excellent abrasion resistance, tensile strength, energy absorption, resistance to stress cracking and a low coefficient of friction. These properties couples with extremely low moisture absorption make UHMW an exceptional material for industrial impact, wear, and sliding applications.
Key Benefits of POLYETHYLENE UHMW
Impact Resistance – UHMW has an outstanding ability to absorb energy. It can withstand impact at temperatures as low as -140°F.
Low Coefficient of Friction – Excellent for use in a wide variety of sliding or rubbing applications because of its high slip characteristics and good release properties.
Corrosion and Chemical Resistance – UHMW is highly resistant to corrosion and chemicals (see chemical resistance chart pg. 127).
Low Moisture Absorption – UHMW absorbs virtually no water, enabling it to be used in high moisture environments without effecting dimensions or properties.
Non-toxic, Odorless, Tasteless – Because it is physiologically inert and produces no harmful dermatological effects, UHMW has F.D.A. sanction for use in food handling equipment.
